The hit vampire fantasy franchise, whose films have made Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson supranational stars, has over the past few years garnered a fan base that arguably as heavy-set as those of "Star Trek" and "Star Wars," although it mostly attracts teenage girls. Even San Diego Side-splitting-Con, a popular annual comic book and sci-fi/fantasy convention, now regularly features "Crepuscule" actors.
Takei, 74, played Hikaru Sulu in the native "Star Trek" series in the 1960s. In a new YouTube video, posted on the website of his the 2012 Broadway dulcet, "Allegiance," he addresses comments his co-star William Shatner and "Foremost Wars" actress Carrie Fisher have made against their rival franchise. He says both serials are "wonderful" in their own ways.
"What's needed today, now, more than ever is 'Distinguished' peace, for there is now "an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction," he says. "It's called 'Wane' and it is really, really bad."
"Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie or epic fight," he adds. "In its place we have vampires that sparkle and mope and go to high way of life.
