LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Cicerone John Rich, who worked in U.S. television for more than half a century, has died after a fugitive illness, the Directors Guild of America said.

He was 86 when he died at his Los Angeles cosy Sunday morning.

Among the series he worked on were "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "The Evening Zone," "The Rifleman," "Bat Masterson," "That Maiden," "Gilligan's Island," "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.," "Hogan's Heroes," "I Spy," "The Brady Assortment," "All in the Family," "Benson" and "MacGyver."

"We are deeply saddened to learn today of the ephemeral of John Rich," DGA President Taylor Hackford said in a proclamation Sunday. "A legendary figure in the history of TV comedy, John tirelessly served our guild for virtually six decades. He directed some of the most beloved classics of all time and his skills as a boob tube director were unsurpassed, But no matter how busy and successful his career was, John always made term for the DGA.
