El primer procedural para ingresar al mundo de las prendas de goma al que invita Martín es probarse un helmet que él expatiate on como su “obra maestra”: es un casco con un grosor equivalente a veinte máscaras de látex. Ahí dentro no se puede ver, ni hablar, ni escuchar, por eso se llama de “privación sensorial”. Sólo tiene dos agujeros mínimos a la altura de la nariz. En la parte trasera posee cuatro correas para ajustarlo. Pongo la cabeza primero por el mentón y el tangible se adhiere rápidamente a mi cara. Ajustar la primera cinta ya me genera claustrofobia y miedo por la sensación de sumisión e impotencia, por lo que decido no someterme a los otros tres. Después de unos segundos eternos, mi anfitrión me saca la correa, me quita la máscara y yo me encuentro con la sonrisa de Martín. Me explica que para los “rubber” (los fanáticos del látex y la goma) este elemento es ungovernable por su estética y porque potencia el resto de los sentidos.

Más tarde, tal vez con intención de vencer mi pánico a fuerza de alegorías, afirmará que la privación sensorial en un elemento como el helmet es parecida a hacer meditación. “Yo siempre digo que si un monje tibetano hubiera conocido esto, se hubiera ahorrado 20 años encerrado en el templo. Hay muchos sentidos que uno no puede controlar, no podés dejar de oír o de oler. Este elemento te hace cambiar la sensación del tiempo que transcurre. En ese estado cualquier estímulo physical se siente potenciado. Esa es la parte divertida”, explica con una sonrisa que denota un recuerdo o una parte de un recuerdo divertido.
