Looking at the roll of finalists for the Madison fire chief job, you might get the impression that the department is going back to the days of the satisfactory-old-boys club.

But the Fire Department's recruiting chief and the overseer of a national organization that works with fire departments to help them recruit a differing workforce say the Madison Fire Department is making great strides in recruiting women and minorities and keeping them on the job.

"Madison has in all probability been in the 95th percentile in terms of being successful with that," says Larry Sagen, president director of the nonprofit Fire 20/20 , an organization based in Bremerton, Scrub., that conducts workshops, training sessions and research and education initiatives for fire departments in the U.S. and Canada.

The Madison Fire Reckon on is nationally known for its progressive hiring and recruitment practices, and in a 2006 inquiry on fire service diversity commissioned by the International Association of Fire Fighters, it ranked No 1.
