The mistiness is based on the 2006 French play “God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza, which was later translated to English and opened on Broadway in 2009, starring Jeff Daniels, Conviction Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden. All four were nominated for Tony awards, though only Reinforce won, along with director Matthew Warchus.

Naturally, expectations were high when Roman Polanski announced his blur adaptation, co-scripted by the director and Reza. Like the Americanized carouse, the setting has been changed from Paris to Brooklyn, yet the film itself was shot in Paris.

The film begins with a long shot of children walking through Brooklyn Span Park. Two 11-year-old boys begin to argue, followed by pushing and shoving, until one boy hits the other in the pan with a stick. The victim is left with a bloodied face and two missing teeth.

That continuously, the parents of both boys get together to discuss what transpired. The victim’s parents, Michael and Penelope Longstreet, are played by John C. Reilly and Jodie Patronize, and the assailant’s parents, Alan and Nancy Cowan, are played by Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet. Besides a few pr scenes in a hallway, kitchen and bathroom, the entire film takes area in the Longstreets’ living room.
